Right now there's just one of "us." I'll share a few paragraphs on current events; then I'll give you a little background on Ken Obermeyer.
I have a full-time job. My spare time is mostly devoted to activities surrounding A Course in Miracles: personal study, writing, meditating, and study groups. In 2006 I began working on a retail version of the open-eyed meditations I developed over the years for personal use. This CD, A Course in Miracles Open-Eyed Meditations: Volume 1: The Path of Light, was released in June 2007. You can read more about the CD on the Bookstore page.
By May 2008, I knew I wasn't cut out to be a web master. So I turned to Dee Doyle, a Course student who manages the Circle of Atonement website. In what seems like a few hours, Dee transformed my "kindergarten" website into what you see today. Thanks Dee!
With that brief introduction on current events, what's my background?
Strange as it feels to write about myself, here's a CliffsNotes version of some things you might want to know:
I was raised a Catholic. I liked religion so much I became an altar boy and dreamed of being a priest someday. But that dream died as I began asking questions my religion couldn't answer—at least in ways that made sense to me. I remember asking my pastor questions like, "If God is omnipresent, He's wherever I am. So why do I have to go to church and mass?" "If God is love, why is there a hell?" "Why did Jesus have to die for my sins?" Suffice it to say, by my senior year in high school, I was no longer a practicing Catholic. In fact, I became an agnostic.
That lasted until my senior year in college when I took a self-improvement course called The Silva Mind Control Method. That was my introduction to metaphysics and meditation. Taking that course changed my life. It answered many questions religion couldn't, and it rekindled my childhood interest in God and understanding the purpose of life.
After graduating from college, I began instructor trainining to teach Silva Mind Control to others. I loved teaching metaphysics. I became State Director for Ohio during my career with Silva Mind Control International and earned a degree in Psychorientology during that period. Psych (mind) orientology (orienting) meant learning how to train the mind to go inward, tap its innate abilities, and use them for the benefit of mankind.
Later, I went through training to teach workshops for Dr. Shad Helmstetter's Self-Talk Institute. Teaching that course at several Fortune 500 companies taught me a lot regarding how widespread is the interest in "personal development." Most people want to live a higher quality of life than they're living, but don't always know how to go about it.
Over a couple of decades, I read what seems like everything under the sun regarding metaphysics, mysticism, and spirituality. Then people started mentioning A Course in Miracles to me, but every time I browsed through it in a bookstore, I'd put it down because of the Christian terminology. Been there, done that.
Then I read Return To Love by Marianne Williamson. That convinced me to buy the Course. Before I finished the Text, I realized I'd found my spiritual path. To me, the Course contained everything I'd studied and experienced, and more. It answered questions that remained after decades of study and meditation. To me, the Course is the complete answer.
I began developing my own seminars in metaphysics and spirituality, and I wrote my first book, Target Joy: A Search For Truth. It's my spiritual journey written in the form of a novel. Though it contains principles, ideas and themes in A Course in Miracles, it's not a book on the Course. You can read more about the book on the Catalog page on this site.
I hit the pause button on teaching for awhile. 2006 brought the desire to return to writing and teaching, but this time it would be completely Course-related.
Peace goes with you,
